You wanna know what came out this week? Nothing. While, yes, technically stuff did come out, it was just nothing interesting. We have a fairy-tale re-imagining that's probably mediocre, a Jason Statham action movie that's probably mediocre, and a raunchy ensemble cast comedy that has been panned by every known human being who's seen it. So what do you do with that? Go see the mediocre stuff that came out last week and that's exactly what I did. So is this week's movie as mediocre as I've alluded to? Let's find out in my review of...
PLOT
Billy Taggart is an ex-cop turned private investigator. The reason he's an ex-cop is because he killed a criminal in cold blood and while he won the court case, the mayor, Nicholas Hostetler, was given some evidence against Taggart. Because of this, Billy has to leave the force, but he's left on Hostetler's good side. Seven years later and one week from election day, the mayor assigns Billy a case. He wants Billy to follow his wife for he believes she's cheating on him. Once Billy gets the evidence, he soon discovers that there's more to this plot than just infidelity.
PROS
Russell Crowe is really good in his part, which surprised me. Not to say that he's a bad actor, in fact he's one of the greats, I was just surprised that he even tried for this seemingly average looking film.
The movie is a thriller, not an action-thriller, which I really enjoyed. While there is some action, it never gets to a point where it becomes an action movie. It begins as a thriller and sticks with the genre to the end.
While there is little action, what's there is shot well. It is close-up and shaky, but it never gets to the point where you can't tell what's going on.
CONS
The plot is very cliched. While there are some surprises, everything was mostly telegraphed or easy to spot before hand.
There are a few side stories that never really go anywhere, like Billy's relationship with his girlfriend. While at first it seems normal, there comes a point at the middle of the side plot where stuff starts to happen, and then it's just abandoned and never heard from again.
CONCLUSION
This is one of those movies that's hard to review. While not a bad movie, there's nothing great about it either. I can't be glowing about it, but I can't pan it either. Overall, it's an average movie that good for a rental, but not for $8 in the theater.

Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony: NR #37
As you may or may not know, I am a brony, also know as an adult fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Others might say I'm also known as a deviant or gay. While I do understand why people look at it in that way, I also wish there was a way I could convince people that it's not as weird as it sounds. I tried with an article on it, and while it has the most views out of anything I've ever written, I feel it's not my best work. Since then I've been trying to redo it to no avail. Then, just last weekend, a documentary was released to the public, a film I had been following with intense anticipation. It's a documentary made to put the brony community in a good light and introduce the fandom to the average person. It was funded by bronies, even gaining more money they could have ever dreamed, and finally released. Does it accomplish its job? Let's find out in my review of...
PLOT
In 2010, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" premiered on television and soon started to gain a large and unexpected fanbase of adults, specifically adult men. "Bronies: EUAFMLP" Sets out to show the good sides of the fandom and follows seven different bronies from around the world on their quest to go to their respective My Little Pony conventions.
PROS
The film's goal is to try and explain the brony phenomenon to the general public, and in my opinion it succeeds. It tries to find the diversity in the community and shows different types of people with different backgrounds all uniting under one show. It goes very far into the fandom, at least far enough so they can keep the film family friendly.
The film doesn't try to say this is normal and addresses the weirdness of the situation, which I'm thankful for. It would have been just awkward if they just automatically accepted it and moved on, but they don't, they address the strangeness head on and never back down.
All of the people they decide to follow are all very interesting in their own right and are fun to follow around. They all are, once again, unique and come from different backgrounds, which gives the film variety.
There are a number of sections of an original animated musical made specifically for the film that are fun and do a good job at getting some of the explanations out there in a fast but understandable manor. Also we get to see a ponified John de Lancie sing, and I mean, who doesn't want to see that?
While this film may not have been made for only the bronies, it has a ton of fun and clever references to the community that thankfully don't get in the way of the message or pacing of the documentary.
CONS
The film's original title was "Bronycon: the Documentary" because it was going to focus exclusively on said convention, but once they raised almost $350,000 for a film whose goal budget was much less than that, they decided to expand it to other conventions and places around the world. Sadly, this sudden larger scale hurts the film. It feels too big and doesn't show some people as often as it should. There's a lot of times in the middle where it becomes all about "Bronycon" and not about the bronies themselves. It also focuses on seven people, so some don't get as much screen time as the others and you forget that some were even in the film.
CONCLUSION
Now, since I am a brony, I already have a bias towards this, but I also feel this allows me to be more harsh on the film if it doesn't represent the community in a good way. I'm happy to say that this documentary does a great job at portraying its message and in my opinion accomplishes its goal. Now I have yet to show it to a non-brony, so I don't know how they'll react to it, but I still feel this is the best way to explain the fandom to those not as keen on the idea of grown men watching technicolor ponies. Overall it's a great film for not only the bronies, but for the uninitiated as well.
DISCLAIMER: This film is only available for digital download at this website here, but don't worry, it's a reliable website and it's cheap. Also the DVD and Blu-ray release is sometime in February, and the team is currently trying to get the film on services like iTunes and Netflix. So if you want to watch the film. that website is the only way, at least for now.

I Saw the Devil/ V/H/S DOUBLE REVIEW!!!! : CR #26 & 27
This week I had a four day week-end, so I spent most of it doing what I do best. Nothin' but watchin' stuff on Netflix. I finally saw a few films and tv shows I had been meaning to for a while, two of which I'm going to review today. The few thing these films have in common is that both were huge at film festivals, and both are extremely gory and 100% not for children. This week I'm reviewing...
I SAW THE DEVIL
PLOT
Set in South Korea, Kim Soo-hyeon, a police officer, discovers that his pregnant wife has been brutally murdered by a sadistic serial killer named Jang Kyung-chul. Kim is given 2 weeks leave from his job and he uses this time to track down the killer and get his revenge. Once he finds Jang, he beats and tortures him to near death and then lets him go. Kim's plan is to now hunt down Jang, torture him, stop when he's almost dead, then leave him so he can come back and do it again.
PROS
Even though this is a foreign movie and I had to read subtitles, I could still tell the performances were amazing. Everyone gives their all and the performances are never lost in translation.
Director Jee-woon Kim saves this movie from being another torture fest by adding style to this film. There are some remarkable and unforgettable sequences in this film. One example is a scene where Jang is in a cab with the driver and another passenger. At one point, Jang pulls out his knife and starts cutting both people in the car. As this is going on, the camera is spinning around the action, letting it play out and never shying away from the blood.
The film is very graphic and full of disturbing and cringe worth imagery, but what keeps it from being another "Saw" or "Texas Chainsaw" remake is that there's more to it than the gore. While I will admit the violence can get excessive, it's not a huge problem because we care about the characters and what's going to happen to them, making the bloody scenes feel tense and meaningful to the story.
There's a great cat and mouse or hunter has become the hunted aspect to the film, but what sets it apart is the new spin they put on the formula by asking the question who's the true psycho here, the serial killer, or the police officer. It's a wonderful dynamic that had me questioning myself. There's even a point halfway through where the Kim becomes the villain and Jang the victim.
The score (or soundtrack, I'm not sure which) is awesome. It's a very cool sound that I kept noticing throughout the film.
CONS
The film runs a bit too long at almost 2 hours and 30 min. While it never slows down, it just gets tiring after a while.
CONCLUSION
This is a bloody, sick, revenge flick. But it's also a thoughtful and engaging one too. It shows that you can have great story and characters in the middle of awesome gore and violence and still be entertaining, if you want to call it that. Overall, this is a great revenge film that's certainly not for the faint of heart.

V/H/S
PLOT
A group of bro, frat house guys are hired by an unknown third-party to break into an old man's house and steal a rare VHS tape. Once they're inside, they find the old man dead in his chair in front of many T.V.s and tons of random VHS tapes. They start watching what's on the tapes and find five chilling tales of found footage horror full of creatures, ghosts, and death.
This is another one that I'm going to have to do a little differently See, "V/H/S" is an anthology, found footage horror film, which means it has six different short segments put into one feature film. So I'm just going to go over each section in it's own independent review of sorts. Alright, let's get started.
Amateur Night (David Bruckner)
Three friends go out drinking one night with the intention of picking up chicks. They've installed a wed-cam into one of their glasses to capture it because ..college guys are dumb. Anyway, they go out, have a fun time, but they pick up this one girl who looks and feels very strange and all she can say, in a very creepy way I might add, is "I like you". It soon turns out there's more devious things at work here. This was good way of starting out the film. It's creepy, interesting, and has one heck of a finale. The effects are done extremely well and the camera movements aren't too insane. A problem is that it has too much of "BRO" mentality to it. What I mean is that the guys we follow are the stereotype "Jersey Shore" bros but even more extreme and annoying. It makes it kinda hard to care what happens to them. I do have some other things to say about this one, but I won't dare spoil it here. I'll just say that whatever was wrong with girl will haunt me for the rest of my days.
Second Honeymoon (Ti West)
A couple on their second honeymoon go to the American west and stop in a small town and stay in a motel. While there, they find a Wild West themed fortune teller who gives the wife a cryptic message about reuniting with a lost loved one. This is the worst of the bunch. If the plot sounds vague, that's because I wasn't sure what to write. Nothing happens in this segment until the confused twist ending that feels forced and out of place in terms of the story. Overall, it's just a boring forgettable mess.
TUESDAY the 17th (Glenn McQuaid)
A group of college kids are going to an old lake and camp site that one of the people in the group used to go to all the time. Once there, they soon discover that there was a horrible unsolved killing spree that happened at this lake, as the teens are soon killed off. This one has an interesting concept that falls short due to it's cast. The killer in question is really cool and legitimately creepy, even if we don't know who or what he/she/it is. The segment's ultimate downfall is the teens. They, like the first segment, have a terrible case of "BRO" DGAS (Don't Give a S#*t Syndrome). Once they're getting killed off, you just don't care. It looks cool, sure, but it just has no emotional residence. And a characters secret motivation is reveled and it just seems stupid. It doesn't make sense and seems illogical. Either way, this is a good short and a welcome change from the horrible second segment.
The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger (Joe Swanberg)
Emily and James are a couple who have been away from each other for a while and talk through Skype or some other video chat service. While talking about a weird bump on her arm, Emily starts hearing strange noises in her apartment. Once she goes to investigate, paranormal things start to happen and are all caught by her boyfriend. This, like the third segment, has an interesting concept. A haunted apartment story from the perspective of the guy stuck in the corner video chat box. It has some creepy moments and seems like it's leading up to something good, but then it has a confused twist ending. While it doesn't ruin the segment, it does cause it to lose some of its scariness. Some people may not have a problem with it, but I personally thought it would've been better without the twist ending.
10/31/98 (Radio Silence)
On Halloween night, a group of friends go to a house party at a really cool looking house. When they get there though, there's no one at the house. They start to see weird stuff, but thing it's just a cool haunted house, when in reality there's something more going on. This is the highlight of the film and the biggest reason to sit through the other four segments. It's creepy, funny, realistic, and has an awesome finale with everything including the kitchen sink thrown at you, literally. While this also has the "BRO" mentality, it doesn't bother you as much because these guys are a) drunk and b) doing all the stuff you would do in that situation. I cannot stress how amazing this segment is and how promising the directing quartet "Radio Silence" is looking right now. It's the perfect way to end the film, by ending it on a high note.
Tape 56 (Adam Wingard) (Sorry, No Poster Available)
This is the segment that ties all the others together and the one described the the first plot synopsis. This is very close to either being the worst or second worst. You don't care about any of the characters, since they spend the first 10 minutes of the movie showing how horrible these people are, and it has a twist that you can figure out by the end of the second segment. The last part of the film was originally the ending scene of this story, which I'm so happy they changed because "Radio Silence"'s segment is such a better one to end on. Overall, it's just filler until the next story and feels rushed.
CONCLUSION
"V/H/S" is a hard film to rate. It has many ups and just as many downs having multiple segments made by multiple different people. It has its shinning moments, like "10/31/98", and its utter failures, but overall it's worth sitting through the crap just to see the great stuff. One last note, this film has a hard "R" rating, meaning it is very gory and full of nudity, so keep your kids and faint of heart away.

Gangster Squad: NR #36
So the Academy Awards were on last night... Not much to really say except thank god "Argo" came out on top. Also it's January, the Hollywood dumping ground, so we get bad to mediocre stuff. Which one is this week's film? Guess you'll have to find out in my review of...
PLOT
Los Angeles in 1949 has been taken over by the mafia, specifically Micky Cohen, who has paid off most of the cities government workers and has been ruthless in his attempt to keep Chicago out of his city. The one cop he's yet to influence is Sgt. John O'Mara who believes in justice and freedom more than he does in life. Chief of police, Chief Parker, assigns O'Mara a squad to fight against the mafia, but they'll be unprotected by the law. O'Mara then recruits 5 people to go to war with Cohen and crew.
PROS
Sean Penn is great in this film as Mickey Cohen. He actually seems scary and pulls the film along as a whole.
The action scenes are done very well with a lot of style, flair, and blood thrown in for good measure.
CONS
We never really get to know the Gangster Squad. We know Josh Brolin and Ryan Goslings' characters just fine, it's the other four guys we don't know. In fact, the Black and Latino characters are just that, Black and Latino guys, they have no personalities or aspirations, they're just sorta there.
Emma Stone is completely pointless and has nothing to do but look beautiful until the end. She and Ryan Gosling have a relationship that starts out as just casual until the next time we see them they've become completely devoted to each other entirely out of the blue.
The film is extremely cliched with horrible dialogue and plot points and deaths that couldn't be more telegraphed.
CONCLUSION
While I do have more CONS than PROS, I still enjoyed this movie. It had some fun moments and was entertaining, but it's not something I'm going to remember next week, in fact I've already started to forget a lot of the film. Overall, it's like a fun pulp novel, but those novels are under $5, not worth seeing in the theater, but maybe on DVD. Come back next Sunday for a new review!

Rope: CR #26
This past Christmas, I as a movie geek got so much awesome stuff, Lawrence of Arabia, The Avengers, and Adventure Time season 1 are just a few of the awesome stuff I received. The one that truly blew me away, mostly because I wan't expecting it, was the Alfred Hitchcock: Masterpiece Collection. A collection of 15 Hitchcock classics, yet it strangely doesn't have Strangers on a Train, or Rebecca. But how can I complain when it has just about everything else. So instead of seeing the big movie this week, I saw a Hitchcock movie that had the gimmick of being shot in one take. Is it truly a classic? Let's find out in my review of...
PLOT
Our film begins with Brandon and Phillip strangling another man to death and stuffing him in a chest in their apartment. The dead man was named David, and he was considered by these men to be inferior, so the murder is justified. To test just how perfect their murder is, they invite David's friends and family over for a party and make the chest he's buried in the centerpiece of the whole event. They also invite their old prep school headmaster, who starts to suspect something amiss when David doesn't show.
PROS
As I stated before, the film has the gimmick of being shot in one take. Now if you know anything about film making in the 40's, you know that this was impossible to do for an hour and a half film. So Hitchcock has very clever, if obvious, ways of hiding his limited cuts. Because of this, it never leaves the apartment, or even the chest, making it seem like a stage play.
One of my favorite Hitchcock quotes is "Always make the audience suffer as long as possible", and he does that in this movie for an hour and 20 minutes. Once David is inside the chest, the tension begins and never lets up. The camera never leaves the chest, even if it's not in the shot, and the tension keeps rising with the possibility of said body being found.
James Stewart plays the prep school headmaster, and as usual, nails it. He's just a cool guy who you'd have a lot of fun debating something with.
The last 10 minutes of the film is simply astounding. It's the tensest moment in the whole movie, and has an amazing speech by James Stewart. And it all ends with a chilling yet simple phrase.
The film brings up some interesting moral issues that it plays with throughout the whole thing. It's fun to see Hitchcock bring some deep issues into his films, and this one doesn't disappointing.
Something that really caught my attention was that the main characters are the villains, and they stay that way until James Stewart shows up halfway through the film. This leads to one of Hitchcock's greatest stables, making any situation, even if it involves the villains, tense. Whenever someone goes near the chest, you get scarred. Whether is for them being found out, or if you want them to be find out, it's tense.
CONS
The movie has a slow start. You are essentially watching a regal house party with people you know nothing about. It's quite boring at first, but while it does pick up 20-30 minutes later, it still does take it awhile to get there.
CONCLUSION
"Rope" well-deserves the title of classic. It has everything we love about Hitchcock, tension, artistic camera shots, crowd pleasing suspense, and much more. I loved this movie and will still be thinking about it long after the fact. Certainly a must see.
